Life on the farm

Chickens, Chickens and more Chickens! Summer is a busy time for the poultry on the farm, this year we are raising 130 cornish giants and 14 turkeys. The cornish giants are available now for purchase, with the turkeys being available in the fall… just in time for Thanksgiving! If you are interested in pre-ordering a turkey, please let us know.

How do we raise our chickens? Our chicks come to the farm and spend the first few weeks in a brooder, a controled enviroment were we can ensure they have the warmth and feed they need to get the best possible start. Once they are grown a bit and have beautiful feathers, we move them to our chicken tractors and they spend the rest of their time on the farm out on pasture. We move their tractors twice a day to ensure they have access to fresh greens and a clean living space which helps us grow healthy beautiful birds. This system of raising chickens also benifits our pastures as the chickens fertalize as they go!

To ensure the chickens are safe from preditors our donkeys, Bean and Hollyhocks will spend their summer on the pasture with the chickens. Did you know donkeys are can be chicken gardians! the preditors in our area are coyotes and foxes primarily and donkeys hate canines. If they see a fox they charge it and chase it out of the pasture. So far, we have not lost any chickens to preditors and we have a family of foxes living just next door!
